Practically, this means three things. First, narrow the scope. Don't introduce AI as a general assistant. Introduce it as a tool for one specific task where success is easy to verify; boilerplate generation or test scaffolding are good starting points. Let developers build a model of where the output is reliable before expanding the surface area. Second, make the verification process visible, not something developers do quietly on their own time. When a team can share which prompts produce solid output and which don't, the institutional knowledge accumulates. Left to individuals, the distrust compounds silently. Third, give developers the right to report AI suggestions as wrong without that being treated as friction or resistance. If the feedback channel doesn't exist, you're flying blind on where the tool is actually failing.
None of this requires buying new tools. It requires changing how you introduce the ones you already have.
Choosing Tools That Don't Start From Behind
Some of the trust problem is structural to how AI code tools present their output: confident in tone, offering no caveats, no alternative approaches, no signal of uncertainty.
